Col du Tourmalet via La Mongie

LE COL DU TOURMALET via La Mongie
Difficulty - Black
Distance - 99km
Elevation Gain - 1840m

The Col du Tourmalet is why most Cyclists visit the Hautes Pyrenees and this route is the best way to see both sides of the mountain. The route can be ridden in either direction and it's possible to start in Luz St. Sauveur or anywhere else along the route. At 2,115m, the Col du Tourmalet is the highest road pass in the Pyrenees and from either direction the gradient averages about 7.5%. It´s about 17km, from Sainte Marie de Campan and 19km from Luz St. Sauveur, but be warned - It's not an easy route. It's really quite hard work whichever direction you go!

If you're doing the ride anti-clockwise, instaed of going via the Col de Loucroup and Lourdes, an alternative route is to turm left at Pouzac just north of Bagneres de Bigorre and follow the signs for the D26 to Juncalas. This route takes you via the Col de Croix Blanche. After the summit it's all down hill through Juncalas and St. Creac to Lugagnan, just south of Lourdes, where you meet up with Route No. 16 again. It's a little more hilly and a little more hard work, but about the same distance and a much nicer, way more scenic route with less traffic

You can buy the official Topoguide "Velo de route" Map book here from Ardiden Velos or from the Office d'Tourisme in Luz St. Sauveur. It has separate cards for 20 of the best road bike routes in and around Luz St. Sauveur that you can take with you on your ride. It's in french and the photos are a bit old fashioned, but the maps are easy to follow and the routes are still as awesome as ever!
