Col du Soulor and l'Aubisque

COL DU SOULOR and l'AUBISQUE
Difficulty - Red and Black
Distance - 39 and 60km
Elevation Gain - 1025 and 1380m

Second only to the Tourmalet as the most visited mountain in Tour de France history, the Col d'Aubisque should be on every Cyclist's To-Do List. From Argeles Gazost it's 30km to the top and even though it's fairly flat between Arras-en-Lavedan and Arrens-Marsous, (and even downhill for a few km after the Col de Soulor), it's still a very tough climb! Tha section between Arrens-Marsous and Col de Soulor especially, will have you searching for lower gears that only exist on mountain bikes ...

If you're totally knackered by the time you get to the Col de Soulor, there are a couple of cafes there open during summer months and even if you turn around there and head back down to Argeles, you will still have climbed over 1000m.

You can buy the official Topoguide "Velo de route" Map book here from Ardiden Velos or from the Office d'Tourisme in Luz St. Sauveur. It has separate cards for 20 of the best road bike routes in and around Luz St. Sauveur that you can take with you on your ride. It's in french and the photos are a bit old fashioned, but the maps are easy to follow and the routes are still as awesome as ever!
