Cyclo-sportives and Granfondos in the Pyrenees 2017:

There are a number of Cyclo-sportives that go through Luz St. Sauveur each year. One of the biggest (and certainly the hardest), is "La Marmotte des Pyrenées," that starts in Luz St. Sauveur and finishes at the top of Hautacam. That is on the 27 August and the course takes you over the Tourmalet (twice), also the Hourquette d'Ancizan and the Col  d'Aspin. See  MARMOTTE Granfondo Series  for more information.

When to Ride:

At the beginning of the season during April and May, the weather can be changeable, (although so far this year it has been wonderful)! It may be cold at the higher altitudes, so be prepared ... The lower cols and the climbs to Hautacam, Cauterets and Luz Ardiden are rideable, but The Tourmalet and Aubisque are not normally open before the end of May. July and August are the busiest months - It is usually hot and dry but there are inevitably a few rainy days with mist at the top of the mountains. September is probably the best month for road biking. The weather is dependable and it's still warm but a little cooler than during the summer months, so perfect for climbing. The season lasts through to about the middle of October. For current weather conditions, see

Latest news:

THE GOOD NEWS - The Col du Tourmalet should be cleared of snow and open by the end of April 2017.
THE NOT SO GOOD NEWS - The Gorge road (RD921) between Villelongue-Pierrefitte and Luz-Saint-Sauveur is closed to Cyclists from the 20 April 2017 for 8 weeks, to carry out urgent safety work to the cliff face above the road. The road is only open to cars and motorbikes between the hours of 6.30am and 10.30pm. NO BICYCLES ALLOWED!

It is possible to climb the Tourmalet from Luz-Saint-Sauveur. It is NOT possible to ride from Argelès-Gazost to Luz-Saint-Sauveur or to ride the 99km Tourmalet "loop" via Bagnères-de-Bigorre. If you want to climb the Tourmalet, you have to drive to Luz-Saint-Sauveur and start your ride there. Better still, stay in Luz-Saint-Sauveur and rent bikes from us here at Ardiden Velos.
